The MAME guys have legitimate complaints about the license for older source code snapshots not being respected when the retroarch people backport improvements. The reicast debacle was largely due to the reicast developer wanting to get all contributions from others changed to a different license that would allow closed source forks and one of the main contributors at the time who was also developing the libretro port refusing if I recall correctly. Libretro support is also upstreamed in PPSSPP and Genesis plus GX to my knowledge. For example Neogeo takes the bios files just like PSX in the rom system folder and system folder in the retroarch install folder. But if you want others there’s a lot more work. Now there are specifically about 10-14 systems that work this easily. Once you find a good core for the system go to configuration and then playlists and edit that game playlist there should be a setting somewhere to do that and in there you should find set core association for that playlist and choose the good core.If that core doesn’t work exit and close the content try launching it again with a different core. Go to the specific playlist for your system choose a game and associate a core with the game.Go to playlist and choose import content and have it scan your main rom folder.Place all roms you want to use in retroarch in one main folder with sub folders for the specific systems and then the roms in those folders.Go to configuration and hot keys and set a easy to use button code configuration to menu.Go to download cores and go through every system you want to use and download every core for it.Launch retroarch for the first time, go to updates and download all updates except cheats.This guide works for Android and PC versions.
